February 5, 2020
ShortsTV, the platform dedicated to short form entertainment for global audiences, has announced the highest grossing opening weekend for the ‘Oscar Nominated Short Films’ in its 15th annual theatrical release.
The three-compilation showcase of the Academy Nominated Short Films for 2020 opened on January 31st in more than 460 screens across the US and Canada – up from 270 screens in 2019 – earning over $1.1 million in weekend box office receipts.
The release features short films from the Live Action, Animation and Documentary categories, providing the opportunity to watch the short film nominees in cinemas ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony on February 9th.
“This weekend’s record opening for the ‘Oscar Nominated Short Films’ is yet another sign of the explosion of global audiences who love the highest quality short movies,” said Carter Pilcher, CEO of ShortsTV. “Audiences are yearning for authentic connection, emotional engagement and laugh-out-loud comedy and there is no better format than shorts for filmmakers to showcase their talents. The annual theatrical release keeps on growing in popularity and box office receipts, earning over $3.5 million in North American gross last year. Oscar buzz and record opening weekend ticket sales should continue to drive box office momentum throughout our 2020 release.”
