No Oscars for The Irishman

February 10, 2020

The Irishman, the Martin Scorsese mob-movie funded by Netflix to the tune of $140 million, failed to take home a single award at the Oscars Ceremony on February 9th.

The Irishman was primed to be one of the big winners at the 92nd Academy Awards in Los Angeles, having picked up 10 nominations – including Best Director, Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor – but it was outshone by big winners on the night including South-Korean thriller Parasite and World War 1 movie 1917.

The fact The Irishman was exclusively available on Netflix may well have worked against it. Many Hollywood big hitters – including the likes of Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan – see streaming services as a major threat to traditional, theatrical cinema.
