GeoGuard’s VPN and proxy detection solution now in Amazon AWS Marketplace

February 27, 2020

GeoGuard has announced that GeoGuard DB, its third-party tested and “Hollywood Studio Approved” virtual private network (VPN) and proxy detection solution, is now available as a web application firewall (WAF) managed rule set in AWS Marketplace, a digital catalog with thousands of software listings from independent software vendors that make it easy to find, test, buy, and deploy software that runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Availability in AWS Marketplace enables fast and seamless integration of the GeoGuard DB solution for any Amazon CloudFront customer providing OTT video content, in order to protect themselves from geo-piracy and geolocation fraud.

According to GlobalWebIndex*, one in four web users regularly use VPNs, with the predominant purpose of bypassing geographical or territorial restrictions on content. This integration can provide a simple and effective method for OTT platforms on Amazon CloudFront to deploy GeoGuard’s VPN and proxy detection solution as part of their content protection strategy.

In addition to fast and seamless integration, implementing VPN and proxy detection at the CDN level enables OTTs to take advantage of enhanced protection against the use of exploited residential IPs that are being offered by VPN providers trying to circumvent traditional VPN detection methodologies.

“Content security is essential to our media customers who are delivering premium streaming video content over Amazon CloudFront,” says Chris Grusz, Director, WW AWS Marketplace and Service Catalog, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “Ensuring this valuable content is protected from piracy is paramount to content owners such as studios, sports leagues, and other rightsholders. We’re delighted to welcome GeoGuard in AWS Marketplace to provide Amazon CloudFront customers an additional layer of protection against VPN and proxy-based geolocation fraud and geo-piracy.”

“Integrating GeoGuard through AWS WAF provides a near instantaneous way for Amazon CloudFront customers to deploy our third-party tested and “Hollywood Studio Approved” VPN and proxy detection solution,” says Alastair Campbell, Commercial and Product Marketing Manager at GeoGuard. “Protecting OTT content from location-based fraud and piracy ensures the value of content is upheld. This supports a sustainable business model that allows the content creation industry, whether that’s film, TV or live sports, to remain economically viable and deliver the content that consumers want, now and into the future.”

Amazon CloudFront and GeoGuard customer, the BBC, commented: “GeoGuard forms part of the suite of tools that we use to control who accesses our content and from where.”
