LINE selects Intertrust to protect digital trading cards

August 19, 2020

Intertrust has announced that LINE Corporation will use its ExpressPlay DRM (digital rights management) cloud service to protect LINE’s new VVID entertainment digital trading card platform. The companies have partnered over the last several years to produce a popular series of thought leadership conferences around topics of security, privacy and identity management.

ExpressPlay DRM is a complete multi-DRM monetization service for OTT (over the top) streaming and is proven to protect the distribution of premium content issued by major global studios and content rights owners at scale. While known for its effective protection of streaming video content, ExpressPlay DRM has also secured other types of digital content such as e-books, and now extends its effectiveness to new applications such as the VVID entertainment digital trading card platform.

Created for the Japanese market, the VVID platform allows fans to purchase or trade digital cards that feature their favorite content. These cards highlight characters, artists, models, scenes and other content from the worlds of anime, television, movies, fashion, hobbies, and other fields. The high level of security provided by ExpressPlay DRM to closely protect this extremely valuable content is an important element in helping LINE to launch the VVID platform.

“Like other content rights holders worldwide, Japanese content creators are understandably concerned about the misappropriation of their content,” said XX, YY at LINE. “ExpressPlay DRM’s internationally recognized robustness as well as Intertrust’s history of innovation and experience in content protection helped to provide them the confidence to not only distribute their content through VVID, but allow it to be traded peer-to-peer as well.”

“We are extremely honored to extend our partnership with LINE to include content protection for this groundbreaking new service,” said Yutaka Nagao, Intertrust’s General Manager of Japan, and VP of Technology Initiatives. “We’re also very excited to extend the reach of the ExpressPlay DRM service into a new media realm.”

With over 160 million monthly active users as of July 29, 2020, LINE is a social media powerhouse focused on rapidly growing markets in Asia. LINE and Intertrust mutually benefit from a long-term partnership in data security technologies as well as the international security forums. This close cooperation underscores the commitment of both companies to the security and privacy of users as well as for content and services.
