Tubi Mexico to premiere Consciencia

December 8, 2020

Tubi, a division of FOX Entertainment, has announced the acclaimed Mexican romantic drama film Consciencia will premiere exclusively on December 16 in Mexico, the US on Tubi en Español, and Canada. Consciencia marks the first world premiere of a title on the platform in Mexico, in a deal brokered alongside Tubi’s partner in the country, TV Azteca.

Starring Rubén Zamora (Atrapada, Vuelve Temprano), Bárbara de Regil (Rosario Tijeras, Tiempos Felices), and Carla Nieto (Sin Origen, Cuéntame), the movie provides an intimate look at a middle aged writer whose diagnosis of an eye disease triggers memories of his former partner as he begins a new relationship. Written and directed by Sergio Peña, Consciencia garnered a Platinum Remi award at the 52nd Annual Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival, and also received honors at the 30 Girona Film Festival and The IndieFEST Film Awards. Consciencia is Peña’s first feature-length film. Prior to this project, Peña was a writer-director on the short La Vie and a producer-director on the short Arlecchino: Historia de un Vestuario.

Consciencia reflects Tubi’s ongoing commitment to international cinema and some of the most imaginative storytellers from around the world,” said Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s Chief Content Officer. “We’re excited to debut to our viewers this intriguing story of reflection and self-perception that reflects the cutting edge of Mexican filmmaking.”

Consciencia features Zamora as Arthur, who seeks a quiet life, but the memories of his past relationship with Monica (de Regil) pose as a set of mirrors in his new relationship with Elizabeth (Nieto). According to writer-director Peña, the film was born as a thought about the being and perception of oneself before the world. Through Arthur’s story and his relationships, behavior patterns unconsciously develop which lead to an emotional blockade.

Filmed entirely in Mexico, Consciencia is executive produced by Mike Peña, Gerardo Mota, Ricardo Mejía and Annik Siranosian. Sergio Peña, Alejandro Molina serve as producers and Celiana Cárdenas and Marco Casado serve as cinematographers.

Tubi recently announced record Monthly Active Users (MAU) reached 33 million in August, an increase of 65% year-over-year. With total view time surpassing 200 million hours of content streamed each month since April, Tubi has over 26,000 movies and television shows from over 250 content partners, including nearly every major studio. The service gives fans of films and television programs an easy way to discover new content that is available completely free.
