From David Del Valle in Madrid

Tough market competition, along with low cost offers and promotions, have driven Orange Spain to experience a 7.4 per cent fall in its revenues to €1.1 billion in the first quarter of the year. In retail services, the fall was even worse, with a 10.2 per cent decline to €818 million. ARPU in convergent packages dropped by 8.4 per cent to €53.3.

In terms of customers, the company ended March with over 4 million broadband customers, up 0.4 per cent versus the same period last year, of which 85 per cent took convergent packages. In TV, Orange has 703,000 subscribers, up 0.6 per cent, representing 17.4 per cent of its broadband customers. FTTH connections grew by 6.1 per cent to 3.40 million.

“We are in a complicated situation as the Spanish market is very competitive with a strong commercial aggressiveness from all operators , above all in the low cost segment,” claimed Jean Francois Fallacher, CEO of Orange Spain.
