Object Matrix upgrades BT TV’s storage for VoD

May 25, 2021

Object Matrix has delivered an additional 600 terabyte node for BT TV’s existing MatrixStore On-Prem object storage solution. This has enabled BT TV to migrate content from the 6 MatrixStore nodes being decommissioned. The recent upgrade increases the capacity of the existing solution, also saving power and rack space by replacing six legacy nodes with a single new one.

The MatrixStore platform provides BT with secure storage for its VoD content, featuring guaranteed data authenticity.

MatrixStore is a future proof and scalable solution that enables the addition of extra capacity as needed. Since deployment in 2010, BT TV has installed 61 MatrixStore nodes using 14 generations of MatrixStore hardware in the same production cluster. MatrixStore allows content to be automatically moved to newer storage technology as and when legacy hardware is decommissioned. Nodes have been replaced over time, alongside hardware changes, to allow for higher storage capacity and more power efficiency. The migration of content from old and decommissioned nodes into fewer, yet more efficient ones is an automatic process. This has resulted in very little unscheduled downtime throughout the duration of the partnership.

Nick Pearce, Sales and Marketing Director, Object Matrix, commented: “Object Matrix has worked alongside BT for more than a decade. One of the initial goals of moving from LTO to MatrixStore object storage was to avoid the operational overheads associated with managing LTO libraries and migrating to new formats. The seamless MatrixStore hardware upgrades carried out over the last ten years has more than justified that strategic decision. We are delighted to be able to further expand BT’s data storage and meet its increasing storage requirements.”
