May 4, 2022

By Chris Forrester

Globalstar, which already provides mobile satellite services, has registered its plans with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for a huge constellation of 3080 satellites.

The plan is to orbit the planet in 100 orbital planes at heights between 485 kms to 700 kms.

Globalstar’s existing fleet comprises 48 satellites at 1400 kms above the Earth (24 of the craft are second-generation satellites).

The company’s application was filed via Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur).

Globalstar’s existing service provides satellite-based phone connectivity and WiFi to suitable devices.

The company entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2002. It emerged in December 2003.
