June 30, 2022

The World Games 2022 will take place from July 7th to July 17th in Birmingham in the US state of Alabama. At the eleventh edition of the multi-sport event, 3,600 athletes from 110 nations will compete for more than 600 medals in 34 sports. Germany is competing at these World Games with the second-largest line-up of all participating countries: A total of 320 German athletes will compete in 120 medal events to repeat the success of the previous edition in 2017 in Wroclaw – back then Team D finished second in the medal table. SPORT1 will be right in the middle of The Word Games with extensive live broadcasts on free-TV and simulcast livestream on its digital platforms.

A total of more than 100 hours of coverage are planned, with over 10 hours of live sport every day in some cases. Sport1 GmbH acquired the corresponding media rights to The World Games 2022 for Germany, Austria and Switzerland from International Sports Broadcasting (ISB).

At the previous edition of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, SPORT1 reported extensively from the competitions as media partner.

Pit Gottschalk, Chief Editor, Chief Content Officer and Member of the Management Board of Sport1 GmbH, said: “With the World Games 2022 in the USA, we will be accompanying the biggest summer sports event of the year in mid-July. It’s a celebration of sports diversity and love of sport, and we already had a very positive experience with it at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw. We were particularly pleased at the time with the many positive responses from our sports-mad spectators. Our anticipation is therefore also very great to give these numerous fascinating sports, which are otherwise not often in the spotlight, here in the German-speaking world again the big media stage with more than 100 hours of coverage.”

Joachim Gossow, CEO of the International World Games Association (IWGA), said: SPORT1 has already broadcast The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland and thrilled fans in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with its expert presentations of our sports. What we can already promise today is that TWG 2022 will offer great sporting experiences again. This is because only the world’s best athletes in each discipline will compete in Birmingham. Practically everyone performing at our event has a chance of winning a medal. We can therefore expect intense and exciting competitions in the fight for the gold medals of The World Games.”

Oliver Stegemann, Head of Delegation of Team Germany World Games and DOSB Vice President, said: “Team D World Games is looking forward to the season highlight of numerous fascinating sports. The fact that SPORT1 is bringing the multi-sport event to life for numerous fans gives our athletes additional motivation on their way to Alabama. Sport has to be visible to inspire and, above all, to encourage children and young people to emulate the great role models.”
