Ecologi becomes the official offset provider for BAFTA albert

September 8, 2022

Ecologi, the climate action platform, is the new offset provider for albert, the screen industry organisation for environmental sustainability. Both leaders in their respective fields, they have signed a two year partnership expected to reduce around 100,000 tonnes of unavoidable carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).

Owned by BAFTA and backed by the screen industry, albert supports over 12,000 TV and film productions both on and off the screen to be more sustainable. Its carbon calculator and certification toolkit found that in 2021, a single hour of TV produced in the UK contributed an average of 5.7 tCO2e. Together, albert and Ecologi will help production companies to first calculate and reduce their emissions, before offsetting those that are unavoidable.

Linda Adams, Head of Partnerships at Ecologi, said: “For more than a decade, albert has made an incredible impact in the industry, so it’s an honour to be made their official offset provider. Reducing emissions can feel daunting but we hope that our platform will give thousands of productions the confidence and tools they need to achieve their goals. With albert’s authority within and knowledge of the industry, we’re excited to support the journey to rapid decarbonisation.”

Katy Tallon, Industry Sustainability Manager, BAFTA, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Ecologi to deliver our Creative Offsets scheme. When combined with a clear reduction strategy, offsetting can support productions to achieve carbon neutral status. In the UK, all productions who achieve albert certification need to offset any emissions they can’t avoid, so when you see the albert logo on a programme’s endboard, it’s a sign that a production has taken steps to reduce their impact as much as possible. We’re very proud of our creative offsets scheme which not only drives the avoidance of thousands of tonnes of C02e every year, but also works towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

Since 2011, albert has supported the film and TV industry to reduce the environmental impacts of production and create content that supports a vision for a sustainable future. albert set up the Creative Offset scheme in 2019 to help productions offset the emissions they cannot reduce. While productions aren’t obligated to use the scheme to get albert certification, they do need to offset via a provider that meets best practice criteria. As of January 2021, this means productions must offset any unavoidable carbon emissions.

As a climate action platform, Ecologi facilitates funding some of the world’s best climate solutions on behalf of its 35,000 members – from carbon reduction to reforestation projects. Over 14,000 businesses utilise the platform, including production companies Reel Film Media Limited, Buckle Up Films and CM Production Management Ltd.
