SpaceX’s VP of Commercial Sales, Jonathan Hofeller, told delegates at the recent Euroconsult World Satellite Business Week that its Starlink broadband-by-satellite system now has some 700,000 subscribers.
He added that recent subscriber price reductions are further boosting subscriber numbers.
Those price reduction are designed to achieve closer parity with Starlink’s US pricing. The discounts have – in some markets – been dramatic. Brazil, for example, has seen a reduction of almost 50 per cent.
Hofeller also revealed that SpaceX is seeking to establish new Earth relay gateways in order to handle the growth in subscriber numbers and commensurate extra data traffic.
Recently, for example, SpaceX applied to the UK’s Ofcom regulator for permission to build six additional gateways in the UK, and in addition to the three it already operates.
