DAZN readies coverage of UEFA Women’s Champions League 2022-23 season

October 18, 2022

DAZN is set to launch coverage of the highly-anticipated 2022-23 season of the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL).  For the second year of the multi-year deal, all 61 matches from the start of the group stage tomorrow to the final in May will be available live on DAZN and free globally on DAZN’s UWCL YouTube channel.

“Following last year’s record viewership, including a final alone that saw 4.1 million live views, DAZN has further grown as a global home of women’s football and we are ready to engage more fans and further fast-track the commercial growth of the sport worldwide,” said Shay Segev, CEO, DAZN Group. “Consistently increasing global coverage of women’s sports and athletes to reach a similar breadth and depth as men’s is critical to creating lasting change. We are committed as ever to this mission going into what’s set to be another sensational UWCL season globally, alongside an exciting slate of other elite women’s football rights we’ve acquired across key markets – including Liga F, FA WSL, Women’s FA Cup, WE League, and Frauen-Bundesliga just to name a few.”

Below, a taste of what’s coming up this UWCL season for fans on DAZN and DAZN’s YouTube channel.

This Is Elite

In its debut season as global broadcaster, DAZN’s award-winning “We ALL Rise” campaign and collection of films last year drew attention to the first-time global availability of the competition and DAZN’s long-term vision of the unstoppable ripple effect more visibility will have on taking the women’s competition to new heights. “This Is Elite” is the latest campaign evolution, shifting focus to the raw talent and skill of the players and clubs that make UWCL the elite football competition that it is.

The short launch film equally celebrates the historic and meteoric rise of women’s football as it does hype up the jaw-dropping action fans can expect this upcoming season. Featured within are electrifying highlights from just some of the elite players that make the competition so special – faces that are increasingly becoming household names around the world – from back-to-back Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas to Wendie Renard to Ada Hegerberg.

Building on this, a special five-part “This Is Elite” series to be released throughout the season on both DAZN and DAZN’s YouTube channel will shine a light on the biggest stars in the UWCL today as they reveal what they believe to be their own most elite moments, goals, teammates, and opponents. To kick it off, a host of ‘Elite’ compilations have already been dropped, featuring a medley of players – from Sam Kerr to Vivianne Miedema – and their breathtaking skills and biggest plays.

DAZN’s Pundit Squad Returns

The biggest on-air team ever assembled to cover women’s football for a single broadcaster returns, including dozens of professional commentators from across England, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Portugal and new voices from Albania and the Czech Republic.

Together, they will once again guarantee that every single match for the season will be available for global audiences in up to three languages: 1. home team language 2. away team language and 3. if not already covered, English. This marked a first in UEFA Women’s Champions League history last year and contributed towards the millions tuning in live for each match all over the world. Moreover, also guaranteed this year will be even more behind-the-scenes access – from more literal camera access to more areas, to pre-game buildup and flash interviews with coaches and players planned for every single match.

Notable names in DAZN’s women’s football pundit squad include lead English commentators Pien Meulensteen (seasoned sports broadcasting and women’s football pro currently working with DAZN, BBC Sport, Sky Sports, and Premier League Productions); Adam Summerton (long-time football commentator currently with DAZN, BT Sport, Prime Video, and UEFA), and Vicki Sparks (first woman to commentate on a live World Cup match on British television and this year’s lead Euros commentator for BBC Radio). Across the rest of Europe, some of the biggest voices in women’s football on DAZN’s on-air squad include Romain Balland in France, Marcus Buhlund in Sweden, and David Kalous in the Czech Republic.

Next Round of Content Unveiled

Beyond the live broadcasts and “This Is Elite” campaign series, DAZN is again committed to keeping fans on the pulse of everything football with a nonstop stream of social content, with a focus on balancing between showcasing the elite on pitch skills paired with fantastic off pitch personalities.

New series include:

  • UWCL Classic CommsThroughout the season, DAZN will release 20 YouTube Shorts of classic moments from past UWCL seasons, commentated over by the very players themselves responsible for those moments. The series promotes the new YouTube Shorts tool ‘Remix’ – with which fans around the world will be able to take footage from DAZN’s UWCL live streams throughout the season and get creative with them via ‘Remix’ with their own recreations or other fun edits.
  • 1 Minute MasterWith 10 episodes planned throughout the group stage, DAZN’s new quiz series ‘1 Minute Master’ will feature star players from 10 different UWCL clubs. Each episode will see 4 teammates compete in the ultimate general knowledge quiz and answer as many questions correctly as possible in 60 seconds. The winner of each episode will be crowned the club’s 1 Minute Master.
  • The Big QuestionIn another new content series, UWCL stars will answer ‘The Big Question’ – a series of very random questions where, in pairs, players from the same club will be encouraged to think deeply and philosophically about some rather silly yet truly thought-provoking  ‘would you rather’ questions.
  • The Match UpDAZN will also be releasing season two of its successful interview format series, ‘The Match Up.’ Led by new host Pien Meulensteen, ‘The Match Up’ will see the biggest names from the world of women’s football chatting all things life on and off the pitch, as we give fans the chance to get to know their new favourite players.

All content will be available in full on DAZN’s UWCL channel as well as available as snackable snippets on the DAZN Twitter and Instagram social channels.
