NewVic Sixth Form College takeover BT Sport

January 18, 2023

BT Sport will premiere the 2022 Takeover TV Show created by students from NewVic Sixth Form College, on January 28th on BT Sport 2. The show is the result of the BT Sport community initiative, now in its fourth year, to provide 12 local students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of TV production, during an eight week course where they create plan and produce their own studio show.

The BT Sport Takeover show, presented by Ali, Ameila, Rahima, (students from the course), focuses on the BT Sport United commitment, which looks to champion positive social change in three areas, community, inclusivity and sustainability.

  • Inclusivity – In the heart of Manchester we met up with Javeno Mclean, owner of J7 Health centre. An inspiring individual who is passionate about making exercise inclusive for everyone. He offers free personal training to elderly and disabled people in the Manchester area.
  • Sustainability – The team head over to Oxfordshire to meet Asylum Welcome, an organisation which helps asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants in Oxford. Focusing on the organisation’s recycled bicycle project scheme and how these refurbished bikes allow asylum seekers and refugees to get to work, access education, attend appointments or pursue leisure activities in the community.
  • Community – This year we travelled to the Peak District with an organisation called the Muslim Hikers, founded by Harron Mota. Gaining an insight into how outdoor sports can be made inclusive to South Asian communities.

The students worked with up and coming Afro Swing music artist Kimbo 20 also from Newham to provide the music which closes the show, his debut song ‘Searching’.

Jamie Hindhaugh, Head of BT Sport, said: “BT Sport Takeover is a fantastic project which gives students from our local community the opportunity to gain an in-depth insight and hands on experience in making TV. I never fail to be impressed by the content that is created, a huge thanks goes to this year’s Takeover creators and the BT Sport team for their hard work and passion throughout the process.”

Faiza Uddin, Takeover Student, said “BT Sport has really given me a hands on experience which has helped me pick up more transferable skills that will equip me for future. What I have learnt throughout the whole 8 week course, creating an amazing TV show, was what I really want to become in the future as media has always been my favourite subject.  I have always been keen on working in the TV industry. Having this opportunity has really opened my eyes to a specific role in production that I would like to work in. From all the research, the shoots and the edits, BT Sport Takeover has been the best experience I have ever come across, which has changed my perspective and led me to know who I want to become and what I want to be”

Paul Jones Media Teacher, NewVic Sixth Form, said “The BT Sport Takeover project is an invaluable opportunity for our NewVic media students. Each year we have had the privilege of being involved has been truly amazing! Students return after the 8 week project with a new found confidence which is the result of their time spent learning about the industry, job roles, developing new skills, working as a team and being immersed in a fast paced, professional environment. The quality of the work they are creating is extremely impressive, we are so proud of them and we are very grateful to BT Sport for this opportunity.”

The first broadcast of the students’ work will premiere at 18:45 on January 28th on BT Sport 2.
