Samsung to add 2-way satellite to Galaxy phones

February 24, 2023

Samsung says that it has developed a system that will allow smartphone users to send data via satellite, thus intensifying the race among technology companies to connect their devices to non-terrestrial networks.

As with Apple, the data will be sent to low-Earth orbiting satellites in space and sent back to Earth-based teleport stations before reaching end users.

Samsung plans to include the technology in its Exynos mobile processors, and hinting at a move to bring the system to its Galaxy smartphones. But the technology is not present in its latest Galaxy S23 model.

Samsung is now claiming that future versions of its technology will be capable of sending photos and videos as well as conventional text messages.

“This milestone builds on our rich legacy in wireless communications technologies, following the introduction of the industry’s first commercial 4G LTE modem in 2009 and the industry’s first 5G modem in 2018,” Min Goo Kim, VP/communication processor development at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung aims to take the lead in advancing hybrid terrestrial-NTN communications ecosystems around the world in preparation for the arrival of 6G.”
