DSIT outlines Ofcom strategy support role

Michelle Donelan, the UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, has written to Dame Melanie Dawes, CEO of Ofcom, outlining how the regulator can support the implementation of the Wireless Infrastructure Strategy and Spectrum Statement.
The Wireless Infrastructure Strategy aims to drive the deployment and adoption of 5G and other advanced wireless connectivity across the UK. It establishes a new ambition of nationwide coverage of standalone 5G to all populated areas by 2030, restates the DSIT’s commitment to improving 4G connectivity to support rural areas and supports investment by setting out measures to reduce deployment costs, increase revenues, and to ensure that regulation is not a barrier to innovation.
It outlines how the Department will help the UK realise the full benefits of 5G and other advanced wireless connectivity, encouraging adoption of 5G-enabled use cases by businesses and the public sector. It also sets out the UK’s 6G Strategy and roadmap.
The Spectrum Statement sets out a new strategic vision and principles for spectrum policy, with a focus on innovation in the use and management of spectrum to create greater opportunities for growth through increased access. It also highlights the importance of spectrum in enabling wider government priorities – including Net Zero, space sector ambitions and defence.
