Roku City touches down in Times Square

April 18, 2023

Roku, the TV streaming platform, has debuted Roku City billboards in New York’s Times Square featuring fan-favourite Roku City screensavers. Using quotes, memes, and real tweets from Roku users, the campaign celebrates streamers’ enjoyment of Roku City and aims to drum up excitement ahead of Roku’s in-person NewFront presentation on May 2nd at the Chelsea Factory in New York City.

“Representing the perfect convergence of two world-class cities, this campaign places Roku front and center at the heart of New York City—specifically Times Square, a place millions and millions of people visit… just like Roku City. With this activation, we welcome our many clients and partners who are in town for the NewFronts and Upfronts,” said Charlie Collier, President, Roku Media. “We hope all can take a break from the real world and escape to the entertainment metropolis Roku City— no traffic, free entertainment, and purple sunsets.”

In 2017, the Roku City screensaver was introduced to streamers as an entertainment utopia. The popular screensaver draws from the imaginations of social media fans who love to celebrate movies and TV alongside Roku. According to internal Roku data, two in three Roku users would take a trip to Roku City if offered. Twitter data also shows that a mention of ‘Roku City’ appears once every 12 minutes on the platform.

Roku City serves as a connection not only for consumers, but also for partners and advertisers. The billboards represent the intersection of Roku as a consumer-facing brand and as a platform that brings the best of TV to marketers shifting dollars to TV streaming.

The billboards will be located at Roku’s New York City office at 5 Times Square until May 21st.
