Wiegman interviewed by BT Sport and EE’s deaf presenters

May 12, 2023

The third episode of a new documentary series charting BT Sport and EE’s New Signing initiative will premiere during half time (3.45pm) of BT Sport Score on May `3th, on BT Sport  3, and is available now on BT Sport’s and EE’s YouTube channels.

The series follows the journey of two British Sign Language users as they train with BT Sport this season, with the end goal of presenting on BT Sport broadcast events including the UEFA Champions League Final, marking a major commitment to making football more accessible by BT Sport and EE.

Damaris Cooke and Rolf Choutan were selected as the presenters earlier this year for the New Signing initiative, which aims to improve accessibility for football fans on and off the pitch, well as elevating the visibility of British Sign Language.

The third episode sees Damaris and Rolf at the home of English football, St George’s Park. The pair put their interviewing skills to the test as they interview one of football’s highest profile figures, Head Coach of the England Lionesses, Sarina Wiegman.

With this summer’s Women’s World Cup around the corner, Damaris and Rolf talk to Sarina about her hopes for the upcoming tournament, recalibrating the team after defeat, and identifying different game plans for different opponents. During their time with the England manager, the Sign Language duo use this opportunity to refine their interview strategy to get engaging answers and familiarise themselves with presenting in front of a camera.

New Signing forms part of BT Sport’s Sign Up work, which aims to raise the profile of the deaf community within sport and help make BT Sport programming accessible to all.

New Signing builds on EE’s work to support the growth of disability football on and off the pitch, as part of its long-term partnership with each of the four Home Nations Football Associations.
