Women at War – The Invisible Army now in production for Sky

October 20, 2023

Following the success of Eric Ravilious – Drawn To War, Foxtrot Films, led by BAFTA award winning Writer/Director/Producer Margy Kinmonth and Emmy Award winning Producer/Executive Producer Maureen Murray, is in production on a new Sky Original feature documentary: Women at War – The Invisible Army. The film will open theatrically internationally and then air on Sky Arts next year.

Kinmonth’s Women at War – The Invisible Army shines a light on the trailblazing role of women war artists. Traditionally a male domain, war art by women has been invisible and undervalued, until now. When the stakes are life and death, what do women see that men don’t?

Kinmonth’s film takes viewers on a visceral journey into the midst of the conflict zone across the world with women war artists and photographers, driven to document and reveal the atrocities of war and hold the perpetrators to account. The female perspective of war has been consistently under-rated and unseen. Kinmonth sets out to level the playing field.

Made in co-operation with Imperial War Museums and National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, Women at War – The Invisible Army is the third in Margy Kinmonth’s trilogy of films exploring war and art. The previous films are: multi-award-winning Eric Ravilious – Drawn To War, which tells the story of the first official British war artist to die in action in World War Two, featuring Ai Weiwei and Alan Bennett, and War Art with Eddie Redmayne, in which the Oscar-winner examines the art of World War One.

Kinmonth says: “I believe that the female perspective on conflict through art has the power to reveal unimaginable truths. For years, art by women has been ignored and undervalued – consigned to “the invisible army in the attic”. Conflict is global and, as a female film director, I want to tell the stories of these women caught in the crossfire.”

Maureen Murray, Producer/Executive Producer, Foxtrot Films Ltd says: “Following the UK box office success of Eric Ravilious – Drawn To War Foxtrot Films is delighted to be working once again with IWM and now with Sky Originals and NMWA on this ground-breaking and timely new Margy Kinmonth film.”

Phil Edgar-Jones OBE, Director of Sky Arts and Entertainment says: “At Sky Arts we’re always looking to spotlight trailblazers across all art forms, so we couldn’t be happier to be collaborating with Foxtrot Films on Women at War – The Invisible Army to bring this group of women war artists and their astonishing work to the fore. These are such important stories to tell, now more than ever.”

Caro Howell MBE, Director-General of Imperial War Museums says: “We are delighted to be associating once again with Foxtrot Films on this major new feature film about women war artists, which explores and celebrates their perspective on conflict and brings their work to a wider audience. IWM is particularly pleased that works by Dame Laura Knight and other women artists from our collection are highlighted as part of this feature film.”

Susan Fisher Sterling, Ph.D., The Alice West Director, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC says: “[Kinmonth’s film] will broaden the public’s understanding of the creative but unrecognised role women have played throughout history.”

Women at War – The Invisible Army will air on Sky Arts in 2024.
