Spain: MasOrange, Telefónica fibre optic deal

From David Del Valle in Madrid
MasOrange and Telefónica have signed a deal to share fibre optic networks in Spain, whereby the former will have access to 3.5 million homes with no need to deploy more networks as it will reach a total of 17 million households across the country.
In exchange , MasOrange will pay Telefónica 50 per cent of the original cost of the fibre optic network, according to daily newspaper Expansión.
The agreement will void MasOrange from deploying fibre optic networks as it will reach areas thus far not covered by the company. At the same time, Telefónica prevents others from entering in those FTTH regions already covered by the dominant operator and guarantees network alliances with other operators to use its network.
