DVB-NIP enables standards-based OTT delivery on DVB broadcast networks, whether satellite or terrestrial. It reduces the cost and complexity of media distribution by enabling the use of a single converged platform to feed both IP and broadcast networks. It also improves sustainability by eliminating duplicated streaming sessions.

Initial interest in DVB-NIP has come from the satellite industry. Typical applications include:

• In-home multiscreen – DVB Native IP can be leveraged for a modernised DTH satellite platform, enabling content delivery to all screens including mobile devices.
• Public access points – in communities, hospitality venues or mobility scenarios (maritime, long-distance transport, …), DVB-NIP hotspots can serve high-quality linear OTT, even at peak hours, as well as video-on-demand, for instance pushed during off-peak hours.
• Distance education – in areas where broadband infrastructure is insufficient for distance learning, DVB-NIP can facilitate the delivery of education services over satellite using educational applications that can be adapted by governments.

Another of DVB’s suite of IP-centric solutions, the DVB-I specification for internet-based service discovery, was also published recently by ETSI, in this case as an update (TS 103 770 V1.2.1) to the original specification.
