Louisiana-based Globalstar, which is already supplying Apple with emergency satellite signals on its most recent phones, is ordering more than 50 software defined satellites from Canada-based MDA Space. The satellite will be used by Apple on its Gen 2 direct-to-device service.

“We are pleased to once again be working with Globalstar as they develop their next generation LEO constellation,” said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. “With the full contract now in place, we are moving full speed ahead on the programme.”

A contract value of approximately C$750 million (€505.3m) will be added to the company’s backlog in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. This amount is in addition to the ATP value of approximately C$350 million that was previously added to backlog, for a total value of C$1.1 billion under the definitive contract.

On February 11th, Globalstar moved from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to the NASDAQ exchange where it expects to be listed on the important ‘composite’ index of the NSDAQ. Apple owns a 20 per cent stake in Globalstar.
