Canada needs TV and telco marriage

November 29, 2010

Two of Canada’s largest companies say their marriage is the best way to keep Canadian content thriving. While regulators have not yet approved telco BCE’s  purchase of broadcaster CTV, both told a Canada parliamentary committee that their union is crucial.

The companies say that without working together, neither can compete against a rapidly growing influx of online video content from unregulated companies like Netflix and Apple TV.

“The key point is that our transaction will enable Bell and CTV to achieve a measure of scale and scope that will support further network investment and innovation as well as help ensure the production of more, and even better, Canadian content,” Mirko Bibic, a senior vice-president with BCE, told MPs.
