DoCoMo, Softbank eye mobile TV

December 3, 2010

Japanese telco NTT DoCoMo and media group Softbank Corp are among six companies vying to provide a new broadcasting service for portable digital devices.

The prospective operators have  declared their intentions to the Communications Ministry, which is finalising details such as the number of service providers to be chosen in 2011, prior to service launch in April 2012,

The new service will use frequencies made available once analogue television broadcasts are switched off in July, and is expected to offer roughly nine times better image quality than the current mobile TV service delivered over cellular networks.

Telecoms group KDDI Corp, Nagase Brothers Inc, Gourmet Navigator Inc and an anonymous company are understood to be the remaining bidders.
