Pakistan vs India TV disputes deepen

Political problems between India and Pakistan, including threats of war, have led to Pakistani drama series being ‘banned’ by some Indian channels.

Zee TV’s Zindgi Channel is typical, with Zee chairman Subhash Chandra tweeting on Sunday that the channel would revamp its output without Pakistan-originated programming. “We will have Indian subjects on Muslim community,” said Chandra.

The political temperature has not been helped by a provocative statement from the influential MNS party in Mumbai (The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena is a Maharashtrian Nationalist party) which gave a 48-hour warning that all Pakistani actors (“and artists”) should leave India.  One cinema-based union group says it will not permit a new movie (featuring India cinema star Shah Rukh Khan) to be released because it has two Pakistan co-stars.

Mumbai’s police force is promising to supply extra protection to Pakistani film and music stars.
