Telefónica to distribute Netflix on Movistar Plus

January 29, 2018

From David del Valle in Madrid

Telefónica and Netflix are finalising an agreement to integrate the SvoD giant’s content on the Movistar Plus pay-TV platform.

The deal – still to be signed – would allow Movistar Plus to offer its 3.7 million subscribers all Netflix cinema and TV series. Unlike its rivals Vodafone and Orange, Telefónica is seeking a complete integration of Netflix into Movistar Plus with all its content automatically available to subscribers. Subscribers would not have to enter the Netflix platform as its content would be offered directly through Movistar Plus.

The distribution of Netflix would start from September, coinciding with the commercial launch of Movistar 4K STBs.

The deal will put an end to a saga between Telefónica and Netflix with the latter accusing the former of lowering its speed on networks. The integration will also boost the subscriptions to Netflix which currently has 1,163,000 subscribers in Spain.
