Spanish telcos are demanding more 4K content and, in particular, a big sporting event in 4K for broadcasters and content producers to give a definitive boost to the UHD market, reports El Español.

The fact that Mediaset, holder of the FTA rights to the Russia’s World Cup, does not have plans to broadcast any of the 64 matches in 4K has been perceived as a major setback to the country’s 4K market.

Currently, just 10 per cent of Spanish homes are equipped with a 4K TV set, according to SES Astra.

Vodafone, Orange and now Telefónica are increasingly relying on 4K to attract more subscribers. Orange will broadcast the Roland-Garros tennis tournament in 4K through Eurosport and has launched the first TV series Channel in 4K. The platform is also distributing other channels such as Canal Cocina, Odisea and Fútbol 4K. Vodafone is distributing seven channels; among them Decasa, Odisea, Canal Cocina, beIN La Liga, Funbox, Festival 4K and Insight 4K.
