LIFE chooses SmartLabs

February 17, 2021

SmartLabs, a provider of multi-screen, multi-network solutions for video streaming, today announces that it has been chosen by Brazilian ISP LIFE to support its OTT provision in Brazil, replacing Verimatrix for the secure Digital Rights Management and Minerva as the TV platform. Additionally, LIFE’s service will be resold by ISP service providers MZV and LPNet.

The deal has also seen LIFE investing in SmartLabs’ Set Top Boxes to launch the platform. The initial capacity is for 20,000 subscribers but LIFE’s plans are much higher for future growth.

Eduardo Campos, SmartLabs’ Sales Director for the Americas, explains: “When we first started speaking with LIFE, we were discussing IPTV provision. While negotiations were underway, the Brazilian regulator Anatel came on board and regulated OTT as a service. LIFE’s strategy changed from IPTV provision to operating an OTT capability nationwide. With our experience, we knew that SmartLabs was able to support this new strategy, so we demonstrated our flexibility, industry and technical knowledge to meet these new demands.”

SmartLabs is providing a multicast, multi tenancy solution where all the parties can share the headend content, which saves on new investments. Additionally, the ability to provide OTT provision enables LIFE to operate across the whole of Brazil rather than just regionally as it has done previously. The SmartLabs solution includes some security functions to help maintain broadcasting rights. These are geofiltering, which restricts where the service can work based on geo factors, such as location or address and watermarking messaging, which displays a subtle message on the screen to show where the content has originated and is an anti-piracy measure.

Eduardo continues: “LIFE saw our industry experience and trusted in our ability and technical knowledge.  The LIFE team knew we could provide a scalable, flexible and proven solution to match their business growth.  Driving business growth is very difficult for operators in Brazil currently, as the US$ has rocketed. SmartLabs has offered a cost-effective consolidated solution that will enable LIFE to grow exponentially.”
