Amazon Freevee acquires The Moment: How Sports Changed the World

July 18, 2023

Amazon Freevee has officially picked up the documentary The Moment: How Sports Changed the World. An archival documentary, The Moment highlights the success of the South African national rugby team in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. With apartheid behind them and the nation in the midst of a transitional government led by Nelson Mandela, sport emerged as a unifying tool in a country that was profoundly divided both politically and culturally.

The documentary will be available on Amazon Freevee in the UK on August 25th, airing shortly before the 2023 Rugby World Cup—nearly 28 years after the film’s events took place.

The news comes on Mandela Day, an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on his birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on July 18th 2010.

The documentary The Moment: How Sports Changed the World comes from Red Bull Studios, best known for BAFTA award-winning documentary The Real Mo Farah, and Emmy award-winning documentary, The Alpinist. Four-time Emmy winner Tom Jennings (Diana: In Her Own Words, Apollo: Missions to the Moon), served as the documentary’s director and executive producer, with two-time Emmy winner Bernadette McDaid (Stephen Spielberg’s Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero) serving as an executive producer.

Abacus Media Rights serves as the international distributor for the documentary.
