Tao Shiming, head of the Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film and Television’s (SARFT) Department of Media Organisation and Online Programming Supervision, revealed at the 4th Annual 2011 China Media Trend Forum currently underway in Beijing that SARFT is exploring the development potential of paid programming, with the possibility of reducing the number of premium TV channels in China from 132 to 20-30.
Other major emphases SARFT will place on future development of China’s TV broadcasting sector include:
1. Vigorously promote the development of high-definition TV services;
2. Increase research on positive development models, such as TV shopping, and make necessary policy adjustments in such areas;
3. Support the development of 3D TV, increasing promotional efforts in 2012;
4. Facilitate greater convergence between traditional and new media
