Spain: €1.4bn for football TV rights

October 9, 2017

From David Del Valle in Madrid

Inflation in Spain’s football TV rights are becoming burdensome for TV operators. In the 2016-2017 season, the networks paid a combined €1.387 billion to the Spanish football teams, up €388.7 million than the previous year, according to La Liga.

The centralised sale of the football TV rights in the domestic market and the exploitation of the foreign rights – such as for Korea, Japan and Turkey – are the main reason in the rise of the earnings for the teams.

In its General Shareholders meeting, La Liga declared a dividend of just €37,000 versus €94,000 in the previous season. Total turnover amounted to €1.6359 billion, up €395.5 million, in a season when it launched its project La Liga Global network to expand into other territories.
