Sky Deutschland AG plans to introduce a live television application for tablet computers powered by Google Inc.’s Android operating system this year, following it availability on Apple iPad. Chief Executive Officer Brian Sullivan told a conference Sky is evaluating the timetable for a tablet app for Android and possibly other operating systems. The company’s Sky Sport iPad software was introduced before the soccer World Cup last year.
Apple has sold an estimated 10 million iPads sold in 2010 and researcher ISuppli forecat that 57 million tablets will be sold in 2011 and 171 million in 2014.
“We’ll be bringing out live and on-demand services into the Web world beyond the pads this year,” Sullivan said. “Personal computers, laptops, games consoles, pretty much any device that can receive a Web signal will be able to get parts or significant parts of our service.”
The CEO also revealed Sky Deutschland can break even at the operating level without further injections of capital from News Corp.
