Jana Bennett, president of BBC Worldwide Networks and Global BBC iPlayer, has confirmed that the Global iPlayer app, currently in trial phase on the iPad, is to extend to further Apple devices

She told delegates at the Digital TV World Summit in London that from December 8th, the app will be available on the iPhone and iPod touch. “This platform extension is a major move for us. Quite apart from the fact that this increases our potential reach by millions of devices, it also makes us a truly multi-platform, TV-on-the-go, offering.

She also confirmed that BBC worldwide has secured a distribution deal with the UK’s Digital Rights Group that will see titles such as Peep Show, Shameless and Father Ted available to global iPlayer subscribers from January.

In addition, selected speech programmes from the BBC archive will be made available on the service.
