Multichoice to cut channels?

October 16, 2014

South Africa’s Multichoice is facing some tough choices over the number of channels it broadcasts, and the reason is down to the very weak value of the Rand, South Africa’s currency.

Local reports quote John Kotsaftis, CEO at DSTV, admitting that the weakness of the Rand is a major problem, especially given that many of DStv’s programmes are paid for in US dollars.

One option mentioned locally is that poorly performing channels could be scrapped to save cas, although Kotsafatis would only say that “it is not looking good” and that the broadcaster is much more cautious than it used to be.”
