Bill Baggelaar, SVP Post Production Technologies, Sony Pictures, has suggested that his role “and passion” at the studio is to help bring innovation and new equipment as much as possible to productions, whether they be features or television products. “This is for the purpose of allowing us to tell stories more compellingly in creative ways,” he told delegates at a MIPTV 4K Ultra HD Conference session on the on Producing Weekly Episodic Dram in Ultra HD HDR. “Technology not for technology’s sake, but to actually drive the stories that we want to tell, or perhaps tell stories that we haven’t been able to tell in the past,” he explained.
“With Sony’s ‘lens to living room’ strategy, we’re innovating both production, post production, distribution and equipment in your living room, allowing our customers to access our UHD content in many different ways, be they download, streaming, Ultra HD Blu-ray and soon broadband,” he advised, adding that this also included professional cameras and such like.
He described HDR as “a key technology” moving forward for Sony, because it allowed the studio to create more dynamic pictures and really bring consumers of the content further into the stories. “Being able to create these episodic series in HDR is a milestone, but it’s not a singular even; it’s been a series of continual innovations that appear seamless to enable us to get to this point,” he advised.
