NTT DATA and Spectral Edge bring HDR-like experience to any TV

April 5, 2018

Spectral Edge, the real-time image enhancement technology specialist and NTT DATA Italia have announced a deal to incorporate Vividteq technology into NTT DATA’s broadcast infrastructure offering.  Thanks to this collaboration, broadcasters will be able to deliver sharper, crisper images with greater colour and contrast with reduced bitrate, regardless of set-top box or TV set limitations.

Vividteq will be offered to the full range of NTT DATA broadcast customers, which includes Sky Italia. Built in Cambridge with deep roots in the academic community, the technology will be embedded inside NTT DATA’s own filter technology, enabling reduction of bitrate with improved quality. It does this by processing video content in real-time, deconstructing, improving and reconstructing each frame. The technology will be integrated into the broadcast head-end, adjusting the picture on the fly to improve contrast, brightness and provide more vivid colours. The result is an HDR-like viewing experience with reduced bandwidth and infrastructure costs for terrestrial, cable, satellite, IPTV and OTT TV networks.

NTT DATA is a global innovation partner headquartered in Tokyo, with business operations in over 50 countries. In Italy, amongst its specialties, its broadcast division provides systems integration and infrastructure to major media companies, including encoding platforms for SD, HD and SuperHD video content with reduced bandwidth.

“At NTT DATA we have always been focused on supporting our broadcast customers with innovative technology that improves the viewing experience and enhances their competitiveness,” said Riccardo Ferrari, Vice President, NTT DATA Italia. “Spectral Edge’s Vividteq is an impressive technology shift, allowing broadcasters to deliver an HDR-like experience without the expense of replacing legacy equipment.”

“HDR TV has taken too long to reach the living room due to fragmented standards, leading to delays in HDR set-top box and TV availability. With Vividteq deployed in the network, anyone can now enjoy improved image quality using their existing technology,” said Rhodri Thomas, CEO of Spectral Edge.

“Addressing this problem will allow broadcasters to stand out without extra bandwidth costs, attracting and retaining more customers. Combining Vividteq’s ability to deliver a HDR-like experience with NTT DATA’s scale and proficiency will help make this differentiation easier.”

Spectral Edge will be showcasing Vividteq, part of its full suite of colour filter technologies for broadcasters at the NAB Show, 7th-12th April 2018 in Las Vegas. Its other solutions are Eyeteq, colour correction technology that transforms TV experiences for colour-blind viewers and Nighteq, which reduces blue tones generated by TV screens for relaxed evening viewing and a good night’s sleep.
