DOTSCREEN launches new, custom Android TV UI

June 5, 2018

DOTSCREEN, the multi-screen video applications & User Interface (UI) specialist, has announced the launch of its Google Tier Operator customised Android TV user interface for set-top boxes.

Using a customised launcher and a TV app, DOTSCREEN’s white labelled Android TV solution provides access to the different content and services offered by the operator, such as:

  • Live TV
  • Catchup TV
  • Video on Demand (VoD)
  • Electronic programme guide
  • Recommended programmes
  • User recorded programmes
  • Subscription management & settings
  • A catalogue of TV applications available on Google Play

Compliant with Google’s Operator Tier programme, DOTSCREEN’s UI lays the emphasis on live TV rather than on TV applications to reflect the most commonly used method of watching content worldwide. It offers seamless navigation within the TV service provider line-up for viewers, allowing them to easily access information about current and upcoming programs via the zapping banner, switching from one channel to another instantaneously, as well as time shifting and NPVR. It also provides a contextual content dashboard with call to actions buttons.

Stanislas Leridon and Pascal-Hippolyte Besson, the cofounding managers of DOTSCREEN, said: “Android TV is gaining momentum with TV service operators worldwide and thanks to Google’s Operator Tier Programme, they now have the ability to have more control and customisation capability of their UI, such as prioritising their own content while providing access to the Android app store and ecosystem. Relying on the know-how we have acquired by developing other user interfaces for European operators such as Vodafone or Freenet, we have designed our Android TV UI to offer a personal user experience that can be customised and branded by the operator for a unified experience. The solution enables operators to launch a new user interface within record timeframes, ensuring that operators can deliver a state-of-the-art user experience for any Android device.”

DOTSCREEN’s Android TV UI can be integrated into any operator’s infrastructure and set-top boxes. The UI respects both Android N and Android O requirements, and is also available on other industry standards, HbbTV and HTML5.

The DOTSCREEN Android TV user interface has already been rolled out by French regional operator Wibox on its Android 4K TV box. Using DOTSCREEN’s customised launcher and TV app, Wibox provides its subscribers with a unique and cost-effective solution for Android TV set-top boxes, simplifying access to the best content from a range of TV channels, VoD and complementary apps.  Users can navigate using their remote control or the Wibox portal for simplified and universal access.

DOTSCREEN applications are used by major publishers, broadcasters and telcos around the world, including HBO, Fox, Turner, Disney, ESPN, CBS, Vodafone, Orange, Telefonica, beIN Sports, Mediaset, TF1, Virgin Media and more.
