Spain: End of the line for UTECA?

March 15, 2019

From David Del Valle in Madrid

Spain’s largest private TV Association UTECA may be facing its demise following Mediaset’s decision to pull out of the organisation.

Ongoing disagreements between the two largest members – Mediaset and Atresmedia – and the smaller partners DKiss, Real Madrid TV and Unidad Editorial, have driven the company to abandon the Association. Atresmedia also plans to do the same.

The conflict between the TV partners stems from historic accusations from the smaller partners of duopoly in the TV market, and reports to the CNMC regarding Mediaset and Atresmedia duopoly practices. The smaller partners even set up a new Association, Asociación Española de Televisiones Privadas Digitales Terrestres asking the Administration and Atresmedia and Mediaset for a fairer distribution of the ad pie.
