July 6, 2021

WarnerMedia has announced Traffickers: Inside The Golden Triangle, a new HBO Asia Original documentary series that exposes the secretive epicentre of Asia’s illicit drug production.

The three-part, hour-long miniseries premieres exclusively on WarnerMedia’s regional streaming service HBO GO on July 23, and follows the rise and demise of three infamous drug kingpins in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

Magdalene Ew, Head of Content – Entertainment at WarnerMedia in India, Southeast Asia and Korea, said: “Three countries. Three drugs. Three traffickers. This ambitious cross-border project is a true crime story that will both excite and inform. This is the first documentary that lifts the lid on drug production inside the Golden Triangle, revealing a secret world of drug traffickers.”

Traffickers: Inside The Golden Triangle dives into this mysterious secretive criminal underbelly revealing tales of some of the most infamous drug lords in the region. It reveals how ‘the Opium King’, ‘The Mekong River Pirate’ and ‘The Playboy Drug Lord’ exploited drugs, war and violence to claw their way to the top. With exclusive interviews from members of their own inner circles, drug enforcement agents, and victims’ families, as well as never-before-seen archive footage and immersive recreations, Traffickers: Inside The Golden Triangle brings to life the crimes and busts that brought these drug kingpins to their knees.

In English, Thai, Burmese and Lao, the documentary series is filmed on location in the Golden Triangle, Thailand, Burma, China, USA, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia. Produced by IFA Media, Traffickers: Inside The Golden Triangle is directed by Robbie Bridgeman, Steve Chao and John Lam and executive produced by Dean Johnson.

Traffickers: Inside The Golden Triangle is the third HBO Asia Original documentary after the award-winning The World Behind The Teenage Psychic and The Talwars: Behind Closed Doors, which are also available on HBO GO. The streaming service is available in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.

Another documentary, HBO’s six-part, half-hour series, Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes, debuts with two back-to-back episodes on July 13 at 9am exclusively on HBO and HBO GO.

Directed by Emmy winners Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the series brings to life Ronan Farrow’s intimate, revealing interviews with whistleblowers, journalists, private investigators and other sources, conducted for the Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist’s podcast and bestselling book Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies and A Conspiracy to Protect Predators.
