SF Studios announces new Danish comedy Maybe Baby
April 22, 2022
In 9 months, director Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg’s new comedy feature Maybe Baby (Danish title: Bytte Bytte Baby) will premiere in cinemas in Denmark. The film starts shooting this month and stars acclaimed Danish actors Mille Dinesen, Katinka Lærke Petersen, Lars Ranthe and Kasper Dalsgaard in the leading roles. SF Studios produces the film with producer Marcella Dichmann and handles Nordic distribution.
Maybe Baby is a comedy about the exciting and happy times during a pregnancy – or in this case not so happy. The two very different couples, Cecilie and Andreas and Liv and Malte, are both in fertility treatment. Ahead awaits nine months of a perfect and long-awaited pregnancy, right up until they discover that the fertility clinic has swapped the fertilized eggs, setting off an avalanche of absurd conflicts….
The film is directed by acclaimed director Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg, who recently has directed the upcoming Netflix feature film Loving Adults (2022), produced by SF Studios, and the comedy drama Food Club (2020).
“Fertility treatment is still enormously taboo. As many as 20% of Danes have difficulty getting pregnant, and every ninth child is born through fertility treatment. Many men and women are ashamed that they can’t reproduce without help, or rather we were, because I myself went through a fertility treatment. With Maybe Baby we want to create a space for this important topic so that we can become a little less anxious, and I feel that comedy is the best way to do this. When the painful is portrayed through humor, we can better lower our guard and laugh. It is when we can recognize ourselves that we can laugh at ourselves”, says Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg, director.
The script is written by author Pia Konstantin Berg, winner of the Gyldendal’s novel competition for her Danish novel Sommeren venter.
“Maybe Baby is of course based on a story about fertility treatment, but it is to a large extent also a story about pregnancy and parenthood – all the attitudes and expectations associated with the modern parenting role. I also hope that Maybe Baby can help people to loosen up a bit in their pursuit of perfection”, says Pia Konstantin Berg, screenwriter.
Mille Dinesen plays the pretentious Cecilie and Lars Ranthe plays her husband Andreas. The other slightly more bohemic couple, Liv and Malte, will be played by Katinka Lærke Petersen and Kasper Dalsgaard. In addition, the cast will also include Sara Boberg, Neel Rønholt, Solbjørg Højfeldt, Laura Bro and Thomas Bo Larsen.
Maybe Baby is produced by SF Studios with the support from the Danish Film Institute in collaboration with FilmFyn and TV2 Denmark. The film is distributed by SF Studios in the Nordics.
The film is expected to premiere in Danish cinemas in January 2023.
