Yeti sets out to find Wales’s Best Junior Stylist for S4C

September 14, 2023

Yeti Television has announced its commission from S4C for a new competition series, Sêr Steilio (10 x 30’) which sees 27 children (aged 8-12) from Wales compete to be crowned the nation’s Best Junior Stylist. The series will be transmitted as part of S4C’s kids brand ‘Stwnsh’.

Working to real world briefs, the junior stylists are tasked with creating a variety of looks for different occasions, from the fashionable to the surreal! In the competition the stylists take part in every stage of the styling process – from sketching to stitching – as they create customised pieces to form the final look. Presented by Mirain Iwerydd and Iwan Steffan, the briefs will include prosthetics and sports kits, through to drag outfits and the red carpet.

With help on hand from makeup and hair experts, these mini stylists will transform real-world models from blank canvases into hand-crafted masterpieces. Each new look is then sent down the runway for the chance to bag the Sêr Steilio crown and win a special prize.

Each self-contained episode celebrates personal style, creativity, and young talent, whilst emphasising the value of sustainable and repurposed materials. There will also be a series of self-contained masterclasses so viewers can pick up some tricks of the trade – whether that’s how to tie dye a t-shirt or how to create a digital sketch.

The project was initially developed in 2020, with the help of Development Funding from the Young Audiences Content Fund (YACF) managed by the BFI, giving Yeti significant resource for research and development of the series. With S4C on board and a strong proposition, Yeti were able to secure (YACF) Production Funding from the BFI to close financing and begin production. The support from the YACF has not only helped secure a broadcaster for the series, but has also created jobs and IP for Yeti in Wales.

Sêr Steilio is currently in production. The series producer is Lowri Jones. The executive producers are Siwan Jobbins and Siân Price. The commissioning editor for S4C is Sioned Geraint.

Sian Price, Creative Director at Yeti, said: “This series is all about celebrating individuality, sustainability and creativity. Our casting has revealed Welsh kids with talent in abundance and we can’t wait for them to showcase their skills and ideas on screen.”

Sioned Geraint at S4C added: “I’m delighted that we have been able to commission ‘Sêr Steilio’ which we hope will be a launch pad for the Welsh style and design stars of the future.”
