Mweb, a major South African internet service provider and one of the nation’s oldest, is being acquired by Webafrica.

The agreement has been signed and is now awaiting approval from the country’s Competition Commissioner. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

The purchase, if approved, will double the size of Webafrica, adding more than 300 Mweb employees to its 350-strong workforce. No layoffs are said to be expected. Most of Mweb’s customers are fibre-connected although local reports say that the business still has a large legacy of copper-based wireline connections.

Webafrica claims 250,000 customers and is headquartered in Cape Town.

Mweb is itself a division of Internet Solutions, a subsidiary of Dimension Data. It is based in Cape Town. Mweb claims it is connecting over 1.3 million homes.
