BBC dominates Xmas Day ratings

January 2, 2018

The BBC dominated the Christmas Day TV ratings, with eight of the 10 most popular broadcasts, coming courtesy of the public broadcaster.

A Christmas special of Mrs Brown’s Boys topped the charts with 1 in 3 viewers (32.6 per cent) tuning in for the “comedy” show. The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special and episodes of Call the Midwife and EastEnders also drew large audiences, as well as a new episode of Doctor Who featuring Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Doctor which, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, only took the 6th place spot with a 29.1 per cent audience share.

The six most popular programmes of the day were all broadcast on BBC One, which also broadcast the top four programmes on Christmas Eve.

Episodes of ITV’s flagship soap operas Coronation Street and Emmerdale were the only two non-BBC programmes to make the Xmas Day top 10.
