Venezuela’s CanTV pre-pay only DTH service has only been on air for three weeks, but says it is responding as fast as it can to requests for service and installation.

CEO Manuel Fernández says that the state-backed enterprise had installed 2000 subscribers, and had another 6,000 households waiting for installation. “The success is outperforming our initial expectations,” says Fernández.

CanTV offers 42 television channels, plus seven audio channels, with more TV channels promised over the next few months. Monthly subscription costs $19.80, while dish/receiver install is $58. CanTV is a pre-paid only offering, following the local model for pre-paid cellular subscriptions used by 93 per cent of the mobile customer base.

CanTV beams from the Chinese-built Simon Bolivar (Venesat-1) satellite at 78 degrees East.
