French labour strike at Guyana spaceport

March 22, 2017

By Chris Forrester

A labour strike has halted rocket launches at the giant spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The withdrawal of labour halted the March 21st planned launch of an Arianespace rocket carrying the KoreaSat-7 communications satellite and another governmental/scientific craft in the shape of the SGDC dual use (military and civil) satellite.

The spaceport coyly referred to its problems as being down to a “social movement”. In reality, the action revolves around a local business (Endel) which has the task of hauling the massive rocket to its launch pad.

Provided the launch can be rescheduled it will take place on March 23rd.
