Spain: Pay TV breaks penetration record

Almost one out of four Spanish homes already have a pay TV service, with a total penetration rate of 22.8 per cent as of the end of 2011, reveals the latest report from the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT).

Pay TV subscriptions grew by 0.7 per cent to 4.5 million homes, up 32,540 against the previous year, with IPTV and new pay DTT operators taking the lion´s share. Satellite DTH operator Canal Plus are the market leader in terms of subscribers with a market share of 38.9 per cent, followed by cable TV operators, with 32.4 per cent, IPTV services (namely Telefonica´s Imagenio) with 20.2 per cent and pay DTT with 8.5 per cent.

Overall, the Spanish Audiovisual market generated a total turnover of €6,459.2 million, down 3.4 per cent due to the advertising fall. Pay TV revenues grew by 2.8 per cent to €1,471.3 million, representing 35.7 per cent of all revenues in the Spanish Audiovisual market.

Pay per view and VoD revenues fell bz 32 per cent to €42.1 million.
