Sony hit by Hobbit’s Red Camera writ

February 13, 2013

By Chris Forrester

the-hobbitSony Corp is being sued by high-end camera maker Red Digital for alleged patent infringements. Last week another camera maker ARRI settled an action with Red Digital.  Red’s digital cameras are used on many Hollywood movies, notably The Hobbit trilogy.

This fresh action says that three very high-end Sony cameras use and “embody the [patents] without any license.”  The cameras specifically mentioned are Sony’s F65, F55 and F5 units.

The writ states: “Red is informed and believes and thereupon alleges that the sale of Sony’s unauthorized, infringing cameras has resulted in lost sales, reduced the business and profit of Red, and greatly injured the general reputation of Red.”

Red Digital is asking the court to grant an injunction against Sony that would stop sales of the cameras, plus damages.
