Spain: DTT multiplex for sale

June 17, 2014

From David Del Valle in Madrid

In a further setback for the Spanish DTT market, Unidad Editorial, editor of newspaper El Mundo and operator of Veo TV, has put its DTT multiplex up for sale. It currently has two FTA channels Discovery Max and 13 TV, as a further two were shut down in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling that obliged their closure.

With the sale, Unidad Editorial aims to raise funds to tackle its delicate financial situation. 13TV, owned by the Spanish Catholic Church, would be interested in acquiring two DTT licences of its own, although rumours suggest an unnamed multinational company is a possible buyer.

The sale is likley to be authorised by the Ministry of Industry and would be the first operation of its kind in Spain, where broadcasters are used to renting their DTT licences to third parties.
