Kudelski and Yahoo settle patent dispute

Swiss-based TV technology and encryption company Kudelski say they have entered into a patent licensing agreement with Yahoo.

“Under the agreement, the parties agreed to dismiss all pending patent litigation.  Yahoo will make a one-time up-front licence fee payment to Kudelski,” said a joint statement.

The agreement is another important step for Kudelski, having won previous actions against Verizon and Cisco.

This particular problem concerned Kudelski’s OpenTV middleware subsidiary which hit Yahoo with 10 patent infringements following on from an earlier Yahoo claim against OpenTV and which related to interactive TV, security, and sports trivia quizzes.

Kudelski sits on some 4500 patents for various aspects of TV technology, of which OpenTV has a patent archive of some 800 filings.
