Telefónica’s pay-TV platform Movistar Plus will launch a new 4K HDR-equipped set-top-box by April 2018.

The new device is currently being tested with functions including catch-up service Últimos 7 días (Last Seven Days) and the recording of 4K programmes.  The STB will be compatible with the most powerful WIFI connection (802.11 ac) in frequencies 2.4 and 5 GHz.

The president of Telefónica, Luis Miguel Gilperez told the Newspaper El Economista that the company is also planning to launch the so-called Television 3.0 next year – a product “much more social and interactive with the capacity to share content among viewers through the TV platform, as well as to do shopping [via voice control]”.

At a conference, Gilperez said that the company will invest more in developing 4K content (the company invests €100 million a year in TV productions) and vowed to make the Movistar platform “more social and interactive”.

Gilperez also said that Spain is “the European (optic) fibre paradise” since 75 per cent of the population has access to a 300 Mb symmetrical connection, with 3.2 million homes connected.
