India DTH “super-merger” in the works?

A well-sourced report from India suggests that broadcasting giant Dish TV (part of the Essel-backed Zee empire) and Bharti Airtel Digital TV are contemplating a merger.

Currently Dish TV India is the nation’s largest with 23.6 million subs (as at December 31st) and a 41 per cent market share. Dish merged in March last year with Videocon DTH which added about 12.2 million subs to the Dish TV portfolio.

This new consolidation – if it goes through – would create a TV distribution giant with more than 38.6 million subscribers and about a 63 per cent share of the DTH market in India.
